Hammerhead Karoo 2 Cycling Computer

Think of a bike computer as the dashboard for your ride. Sure, you can get away with analog dials to tell speed and gas levels but having more information lets you become more efficient. In this blog post, I will share my experience with the Karoo 2, including how I’ve customized it to suit my needs by sideloading the Amazon App Store and pairing it with other devices.

One of the standout features of the Hammerhead Karoo 2 is its Android-based operating system. This allows for seamless integration with popular cycling apps and also provides the flexibility to install additional apps. In my case, I was able to sideload the Amazon App Store, granting me access to an even more extensive range of applications to suit my cycling needs. This level of customization truly sets the Karoo 2 apart from other bike computers on the market.

I have notable poor battery habits with my phone, I’ve often found myself in situations where my phone’s battery has died, leaving me without a means to stay connected. With the Hammerhead Karoo 2, I no longer have to worry about this issue. I opted for a $5 per month data service plan from Tello, which keeps my Karoo 2 connected even if my phone’s battery runs out. This added level of connectivity provides me with peace of mind while out on the road. This plan also lets me upload my ride position using the Hammerhead Dashboard so my wife can check-in if needed.

One of the main functions of having a dedicated bike computer is the centralization of sensors. I am a self-proclaimed data nerd so when I ride I have a heartrate sensor on my watch, a cadence sensor on my crank of my bike and the aforementioned rear bike radar. I could use my phone but it would mean pairing each of these devices every time I want to ride. The Karoo 2 supports Ant+ and once the sensors are added, they just work. The system then adds that data to the Strava upload once my ride is complete.

The Hammerhead Karoo 2’s Bluetooth compatibility allows for easy pairing with other devices, such as my Shokz Bone Conducting Headphones. This fantastic combination allows me to receive audible alerts from my bike’s rear radar, ensuring I’m always aware of approaching traffic. Moreover, I can now enjoy listening to my favorite podcasts during my rides without compromising my ability to hear my surroundings. This pairing has truly elevated my cycling experience.

The Hammerhead Karoo 2 bike computer has quickly become an indispensable part of my cycling adventures. Its Android-based operating system, paired with the ability to sideload the Amazon App Store, provides a high level of customization and access to a wide array of apps. The added connectivity through Tello’s data service ensures I stay connected, even if my phone battery dies. Finally, the seamless integration with my Shokz Bone Conducting Headphones allows me to stay safe and entertained on the road. Overall, I highly recommend the Hammerhead Karoo 2 to any cyclist looking to enhance their riding experience.
