Aero Tech Cycling Base Layer

In my previous post I wrote about cycling bibs. Just about the only downside to bibs are the shoulder straps. These straps can dig into your shoulders and cause irritation, especially on warm days. On colder rides I wear my UnderArmor base layers and noticed they increase the comfort of my bib straps significantly.

This is why I was excited to find out that Aero Tech Designs introduced their new Sleeveless Honeycomb Cycling Base Layer. Aero Tech Designs is one of the few cycling apparel companies that caters to big and tall riders and the Honeycomb Base Layer is offered in up to 5XL, 58-60 inch chest.

Aero Tech Design’s Honeycomb Base Layer

My chest size is 56 inches and I ordered a 4XL, the sizing was true to the chart and the base layer is actually slightly large on me. The length of the base layer was plenty long enough for my 6’4″ stature.

The material is lightweight but feels substantial, offering an additional UV protection of SPF 50+. The seams feel well stitched and the bindings at the sleeve offer protection from any situation where they might dig into your arms. The base layer is tag-less, aside from a small brand tag on the outside side seam.

After receiving them, I decided to go for a ride. I put the base layer on and then my bibs over it. I could quickly tell that it was going to make wearing bibs much more comfortable, and also help wick sweat away from my body. On my ride I could not tell I had an additional layer of clothing on under my jersey. It was pretty windy, and the breeze cut right through the fabric, something I will certainly appreciate on summer rides. The base layer remained comfortable the entire ride.

While I have only worn the new Aero Tech Designs Honeycomb Base Layer on one ride, I can already tell it will be part of my standard riding kit. If anything chances I will be sure to update this post with a longer term review.

If you are looking for quality cycling gear from an American company that caters to the atypical cyclist, check out Aero Tech Designs and if you want to check out their new Honeycomb Sleeveless Base Layer, head over to their product page.
